Heading into his first direct talks with an Israeli leader in two years, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday he wants the U.S. to play an active role and believes a deal can be reached within a year, as envisioned by the U.S. However, Abbas also said it would be difficult to continue negotiating if Israel fails to extend its 10-month curb on West Bank settlement construction that ends in late September.
